The Extraordinary

Painting by John Thomson

It seems to me I get my best thoughts lying horizontal either at night when  I may wake for a short time or in the afternoon when I take a rest on the floor. Recently I was reflecting on how much our western culture admires the ordinary.. This is an observation not a criticism. This seems to be contradicted by the extraordinary discoveries of science and the amazing human experiences brought to us by films, literature and the media. I don’t deny that we are dealing with a certain kind of extraordinariness although much of it, I think, lies in the area of the ordinary. The ordinary pushed to an extreme becomes extraordinary and perhaps that is what extraordinary is meant to mean. There is also another kind of extraordinariness which is essentially baffling. For example, the more recondite realms of physics, quantum mechanics, neutrinos, multiple universes etc. This is by no means ordinary stuff. Nevertheless, I am maintaining that with all this we soon come back to a state of ordinariness like a dog to its bone. This is not an essay. I am just thinking aloud for a moment.

Do we suppose the ordinary and the extraordinary to be different or just at separate points on the same spectrum? Probably it is sometimes the one , sometimes the other. I like to see it otherwise. I see the ordinary hiding the extraordinary. When we live our life in the ordinary we are unaware of the extraordinary concealed behind it. Much of what we name extraordinary may momentarily astonish but it is soon put aside like any entertainment. Entertainment is for the passing moment.

More on this later.

I have added another painting to give some decoration to the page.
